What Comes With the 2021 Subaru Outback?

Now in its sixth production cycle, the Subaru Outback enters its 2021 model year still fresh from the complete redesign the year before. A high-level station wagon, the Subaru Outback provides standard all-wheel-drive (AWD), a rarity in its class, along with plenty of interior space and lots of standard tech. Bridgeport, WV and Elkins customers can stop by Jenkins Subaru

Performance

The base engine, a 182-horsepower 2.5-liter flat-four, delivers remarkable acceleration, and it is tied to a continuously variable transmission for smooth driving and maximizing efficiency. Even with the AWD system-which, in addition to ensuring peak performance on slippery surfaces, sends power to all four wheels, instead of just the front-the Subaru Outback gets a peak EPA rating of 26/33 mpg. With the 2.5-liter powertrain, the Outback can tow up to 2,700 lbs. If you go with the XT model, Subaru upgrades the engine with a turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four for 78 additional horses, as well as a max tow rating of 3,500 lbs. Go for the Onyx Edition XT for the addition of dual-mode X-MODE technology for deep snow and mud settings.

Technology

For infotainment, the Outback relies on the Starlink multimedia system. Anchored with dual 7-inch touchscreens, Starlink combines a four-speaker AM/FM stereo system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, Bluetooth hands-free phone calling and audio streaming, hands-free text messaging, two USB ports and an audio jack for connecting mobile devices, and trial subscriptions to SiriusXM Radio and SiriusXM Travel Link. Also present is remote keyless entry to enable access with a key fob.

For a significant upgrade in amenities, go with the Premium, which introduces dual-zone climate control, a pair of USB charging ports in the rear, a six-speaker setup, HD Radio, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, and an 11.6-inch touchscreen. Another significant upgrade awaits you at the Limited trim level, which gains proximity keyless access with push-button engine start, a hands-free power liftgate, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a garage-door opener, and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. Only the Touring has a navigation system and a single-disc CD player.

Interior

A five-seater with two cloth-trimmed rows of seats, the 2021 Outback gains front-seat power adjustability and heating and a leather-wrapped steering wheel at the Premium trim level. Leather seats, driver-seat memory, and rear-seat heating debut at the Limited trim level. The top-level Touring gets front-seat ventilation, steering-wheel heating, a power moonroof, and an upgrade to Nappa leather upholstery. Although the Onyx Edition XT loses the front-seat cooling and steering-wheel heating of the Touring range, it is the only one with water-repellant synthetic leather upholstery.

Safety

Subaru provides the EyeSight family of technologies-adaptive cruise control with lane centering, pre-collision braking, lane departure and sway warning, and lane-keep assist-to help prevent crashes. Also present are high beam assist and a rearview camera. If there's a crash, the Outback can deploy any of seven airbags in the cabin. For additional driver assistance-blind-spot monitoring, lane change assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse automatic emergency braking-go for the Limited. Only the Touring gets the DriverFocus distraction mitigation system. If you go with the XT variant, Subaru adds a 180-degree front-view monitor.

Trim Levels

This Subaru SUV is available in base-level, Premium, Limited, and Touring trims. Also available is the Onyx Edition XT with its share of unique interior and exterior design elements, as well as the "XT" versions of the upper-level Limited and Touring.
