Introducing the 2021 Subaru Forester

The Subaru Forester already has two things going for it: a uniquely designed four-cylinder engine and standard all-wheel drive. With the 2021 model year, Bridgeport, WV shoppers will be pleased to know that this compact crossover SUV received a few more touches to keep it competitive in its class. For years, Elkins-area residents have bought the Forester for its spaciousness, traction performance, excellent gas mileage, and comfortable ride-and the 2021 Forester is no exception.

Performance

While other compact crossover SUVs go with inline 4-cylinder engines, the 2021 Forester-like other Subarus-goes with a flat-four, which is a 4-cylinder engine with two banks of cylinders lying on opposite sides of the common crankshaft. With 182 horsepower, the 2.5-liter flat-four on the Forester not only achieves balance, but also remarkable acceleration. The flat-four sends power to all four wheels to keep the tires planted on slippery surfaces, and it is paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) for a smooth energy-saving operation. The result is an EPA rating of 26/33 mpg, which is better than most. For increased operational convenience, the CVT is accompanied by paddle shifters on the Sport and Touring trims.

Tech

For infotainment, the Buckhannon drivers are provided with a Starlink multimedia system headed by a 6.5-inch touchscreen. Starlink integrates components such as a four-speaker AM/FM/CD stereo system, Bluetooth for hands-free phone calling and audio streaming, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, HD Radio, two USB ports and an audio jack for hooking up mobile devices, and trial subscriptions to SiriusXM Radio and SiriusXM Travel Link. For 2021, Subaru spruces up the Premium trim by adding keyless access with push-button engine start in addition to a Wi-Fi hotspot and an upgrade to a six-speaker setup. Subaru introduces a dual rear charging-only USB ports and replaces the monochromatic multifunction display with a color one. The Limited trim gains dual-zone automatic climate control, a power liftgate, and an upgrade to an 8-inch touchscreen. Exclusive to the Touring is a SiriusXM Traffic trial subscription, a voice-activated navigation system, and a nine-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.

Interior

A five-seater, the 2021 Forester provides the largest cargo holds in the class. Expect 35.4 cubic feet between the rear seats and the liftgate, with the ability to max it out at 76.1 cubic feet if you fold down the rear seats. The Premium gains a leather-wrapped steering wheel and front-seat power adjustability and heating. For leather seats instead of cloth ones, go with at least the Limited or spring for the Touring, which adds rear-seat and steering-wheel heating. The aptly named Sport comes with racing-style upholstery with orange stitching.

Safety

For 2021, Subaru introduces a rear seatbelt reminder as standard across all trims. For driver assistance, the Subaru SUV gets a rearview camera, as well as the EyeSight driver-assistance suite, which comprises the following:

  • Pre-collision braking and throttle management
  • Lane departure warning
  • Sway warning
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane centering assist

However, if there's a crash, the Forester has a driver's airbag, two frontal impact airbags, two side impact airbags, and two side curtain airbags to provide protection. You can get more driver assistance if you go with at least the Sport trim, which gets blind-spot monitoring with rear-cross traffic alert (new for this year), lane change assist, and high beam assist. Only the Touring gets reverse automatic braking.

Trim Levels

The 2021 Subaru Forester is split into base, Premium, Sport, Limited, and Touring trim levels.
