The 2017 Subaru BRZ is something of a red-headed stepchild in Subaru's model lineup - not only is it the only two-door sports coupe, it's the only Subaru without all-wheel drive. Instead, befitting its roadster styling, the BRZ is rear-wheel drive only. That makes sense for this particular model, and the overall result, according to auto writer Mark McNabb at TopSpeed.com, is a fun-to-drive, relatively inexpensive coupe.

The 2017 BRZ has some notable updates from the previous year, including a revised fascia, a new gauge cluster and improved tuning for the suspension and engine. The BRZ is powered by 2.0-liter flat-4 boxer engine that makes 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. Although it's available with an automatic transmission, TopSpeed strongly encourages sticking with the standard six-speed manual stick, as it's a more natural fit with the BRZ's engaging ride.

The manual shifter provides great feel, as does the BRZ's steering. The interior is basic but adequate and doesn't distract from the driving experience. Seats are comfortable, but not overly padded - you can feel the road. There is a new driver information screen for 2017 - in full color! In addition to the normal cluster of engine parameters and the speedometer and tach gauge, the display now has performance information, including a lap timer, G-meter and a dyno chart.
