The 2017 Subaru Forester is one of Subaru's three "crossover SUV" models. We put "crossover SUV" in quotes because it's hard to pigeon-hole Subaru vehicles, from the wagon-like Outback to the compact Crosstrek to the boxy Forester, which is probably the closest to a classic crossover in the Subaru stable. Nevertheless, as Car and Driver notes in a new review, the Forester's blockier shape serves a practical purpose, making it easier to maximize cargo space - no compromises need be made due to a sloping roofline or angled hatchback.

The 2017 Forester comes standard with all-wheel drive, natch. It's a Subaru after all. This is worth noting as many competitors in the Forester's class offer all-wheel drive, but as a more-expensive available option, versus a standard feature. Subaru's symmetrical all-wheel drive system is built into its vehicle from the ground up, enabling it to naturally send power to all four wheels all the time. This distinction is important, especially if you live in an area of the country with rough winter weather.

There are six trim levels available on the 2017 Forester: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Limited, 2.0XT Premium, 2.5i Touring and 2.0XT Touring. The standard engine on the 2.5.i models is a 2.5-liter boxer-4 that produces 170 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. The Forester 2.0XT has more power if you need it: it uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged boxer-4 that cranks out 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.
