The Subaru Legacy, as the sole "traditional" sedan offering in the automaker's lineup, sometimes flies under the radar vis-à-vis its higher-profile crossover siblings like the Outback, Forester and Crosstrek and even the compact Impreza hatchback and rally car-inspired WRX. But as CNET's Roadshow notes in its coverage of 2018 Legacy's debut at the 2017 Chicago Auto Show, Subaru makes very nice cars, as well as crossovers. Nevertheless, the 2018 Subaru Legacy will likely continue to be the only midsize sedan on the market with standard all-wheel drive. If you drive in bad weather on a regular basis, this is a meaningful distinction. While the 2018 Legacy does have subtle exterior updates, including revised C-shape headlights, a lower grille and wider rear fascia, the real news can be found in the cabin.
The Legacy now has a larger, 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and for 2018 gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration as a standard feature. There's greatly-improved voice recognition technology, and the addition of two USB charging ports for rear-seat passengers. Under the hood, the 2018 Legacy has the same engine options - a 2.5-liter boxer-four that makes 175 horsepower or a 3.6-liter flat-six that produces 256 horsepower. The continuously-variable transmission (CVT) has received some fine-tuning, however, and is said to have better response and feel.
