Comparing the Subaru Legacy and the Toyota Camry

The Subaru Legacy and the Toyota Camry are two top picks in the midsize sedan category. But only one of these cars - the Subaru Legacy - offers standard symmetrical all-wheel drive. If you live in an area of the country that regularly experiences bad weather, all-wheel drive can be invaluable, particularly if choosing a car that has all=wheel drive is no more expensive, and in some cases cheaper, than choosing a car that does not. How else do the Legacy and Camry compare?

  • Performance. Both the Legacy and the Camry offer similar base engines: a 2.5-liter four-cylinder. The Legacy's makes 175 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque and has EPA-rated fuel efficiency of 25/36 mpg (even with all-wheel drive!), while the Camry's makes 178 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque and is EPA-rated at 24/33 mpg. Both also offer a V6 for more power. The Camry also offers a hybrid engine, but it is more considerably more expensive. Only the Legacy has the boxer engine, in which the pistons are horizontally (versus vertically) opposed, which lowers the engine's center of gravity and contributes to better handling.
  • Safety. Both the Legacy and the Camry received a perfect five-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA), but only the Legacy received five stars in every category, including the frontal crash safety rating. And only Subaru offers its EyeSight® suite of driver assist technologies, which monitors traffic movement, optimizes cruise control, and warns you if you sway outside your lane. The Pre-Collision Braking feature can even apply full braking force in emergency situations, helping you avoid or reduce frontal impacts.
  • Size and space. The Subaru Legacy offers the largest interior in the midsize sedan class, with 104.6 total cubic feet of space, versus 102.7 cubic feet in the Camry. Taller drivers will be more comfortable in the Legacy, which has 42.9 inches of front leg room. And while the Camry has slightly more trunk space (15.4 versus 15.0 cubic feet versus), the Legacy has the widest pass-through space when the rear seats are folded.
